This blog follows my journey studying for a Textile Arts (Hons) Degree with the Open College of Arts (OCA).
I am a busy Mum of two (Josh nearly 17 and Abbie nearly 15) and live in Kent, England. I work in a local school and the recent opportunity of running an afterschool textiles club and doing some maternity textiles work as a cover supervisor opened my eyes to the scope and creativity of non compliant materials. I have rekindled my interest in all things creative now that my children are that bit older and I have a bit more time. Saying that, I will have to fit this course around working full time and running a mobile paint your own pottery business with my Mum. Fortunately, working at a school I will have the holidays to catch up. Well that’s the idea anyway!
My goal at the moment is to be able to gain enough subject knowledge to teach textiles in a school but at the same time I am hoping this course will teach me to relax into art and produce some pieces that I can truly say come from my heart. I am looking forward to researching other artists and going to galleries etc whilst learning for personal development and just letting what I learn take me in a new direction, whatever that may be.
I love sewing, knitting, embroidery and drawing but had never really thought about developing this further until I found this course that I could fit in around my family and other committments. I contacted the OCA and Trisha Goodwin for advice and well, here I am!
My pack arrived about 2 weeks ago and I have familiarised myself with the materials. I am very excited about this new journey and am looking forward to the personal development involved wherever this course ends up taking me.
